Fefu and Her Friends by Maria Irene Fornés (Masque and Gown Theater Group, Bowdoin College) directed by Mira Pickus.

I had an image, so immediate it was almost reflexive, of who my Fefu would be:

black lace corset, oversized men's pants, and combat boots.

Our production of Fefu asks: what is a woman?

When Fefu debuted in the late seventies Off-Off broadway scene, it was radical to place eight women on stage. Although Fornés rejected the epithet of “feminist play” for her work, Fefu nonetheless, in its heyday, wrestled with what it meant to be a woman in an era of increasing autonomy. In 1978, the play asked the following question: what does it mean to be a woman?

an excerpt from my director's note:

But in 2024, the question is altered, updated. Our production of Fefu asks: what is a woman? Utilizing Fefu as a template, the cast is dressed in an ensemble of corsets --  motifs for femininity – and suit jackets – symbols of masculinity  -- creating a Camp, unconventionally gendered assembly.
